OO Kim/ Last August, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced measures to support the publishing industry. Among them, it decided to actively support the growth of web novels, a new growth field, through the revitalization of self-publishing, so that K-books can be recognized globally and continue to win the world's top three literary awards. Nowadays, self-publishers mainly publish in the form of e-books, so today we will learn about e-publishing with Lee Ki-sung. Welcome, Mr. Lee. ☞Subtitle> Lee Ki-sung / President, eBook Academy Lee Ki-sung/ hello. Good to see you. Dr. Lee became famous as a fat lecturer in 1992 when he published 'Computers are tin cans (1,2)' and sold over 3 million copies. He is the first generation of Korean Computer Aided Publishing and the eldest son of the former chairman of Jangwang Publishing Corporation, Lee Dae-Yi, and has been following the same path throughout the history of Korean publishing. After taking over the family business and becoming the managing director of Jangwang Publishing Co., Ltd, Lee contributed to the development of Computer Aided Publishing by serving as a professor of publication design at Kaywon College of Arts, an adjunct professor at Dongguk University's Graduate School of Journalism and Information, an adjunct professor at Shingu University, president of the Computer Aided Publishing Society, president of the Korea Computer Aided Publishing Society, and president of the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea. He has been researching computers and e-books at the Computer Aided Publishing Society since 1982, and opened the Korea eBook Academy in 2011 after retiring as a professor emeritus. In addition, he led the establishment of KSC-5601-92, a combinatorial code that enables computers and smartphones to implement all 11,172 characters of modern Hangul, and took the lead in developing Batang-che, Gothic-che, Title-che, and Cursive-che fonts for the Ministry of Culture (1989-1993) and Sunbatang-che for the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea(2016-2017). In 1982, he established Computer Aided Publishing Society(CAPSo) as a discipline for the first time in Korea, and in 1988, he established a lecture on the theory of Computer Aided publishing at Dongguk University's Graduate School of Journalism and Information, and in 1995, he established the Department of Computer Aided Publishing at Kyeowon College of Arts, dedicated to fostering excellent professionals. In 2000, he surprised the printing and publishing industry by developing the world's first Korean ceramic font for letterpress printing. So far, he has published 81 books (51 solo and 30 co-authored) and 137 academic papers. As of October 17, 2023, he has published 745 installments of his "Fat Lecturer's 1000-character column," which he started writing after retiring from Kaywon College in 2011. On March 3, 2023, <<The Collected Columns of Lee Ki-sung>> was published as a paperback and e-book (PDF) in six volumes. ====== [Figure 1] Computers Are Tin Cans2 (1992), Computer Aided Publishing-4 (2002), Korean Publishing Story (2020) [Picture 2] Publishing is a tin can (2015), Hangul typography and Hangul fonts (2007), Content and ebook publishing (2010) <Q1 Kim OO/ The reading population is decreasing these days, what is the outlook for the ebook market? ----------------------------- Ki-sung Lee/ Let's talk in earnest ----------------------------------- <Q1> Kim OO/ As the reading population is decreasing these days, what is the outlook for the e-publishing market? Ki-sung Lee/ Before we talk in depth, I'd like to ask Ms. Kim a simple question. What do you think 'e-publishing' is? Juhee OO/ It's literally a book that we can read on our PC or mobile, right? Ki-sung Lee/ Unfortunately, that's not e-publishing. E-publishing and e-books are two different things. Computer Aided Publishing, so called E-publishing using computers has been around since the 1970s. In the 1980s, e-publishing began to be used in the writing and editing process as well. Traditional publishing involved typesetters and printers putting together lead type (analog) letter by letter (typesetter), page by page, tie up borders with thread, printing it, and binding it to make a book. ========= When computers came along, fonts (digital) were used instead of lead type, and books were typeset using word processors and page typesetting programs such as Moonbangsau or Kwok, and InDesign, and this was the beginning of electronic publishing (DTP; desktop publishing). Depending on whether a book is printed on paper or non-paper, the final output is divided into 1) the paperback era and 2) the non-paper era. (1) Computerized publishing in the paper book era--- Electronic publications (ebooks) are produced by electronic publishing methods... ebook-only terminal format storage, word processor format storage, PDF format storage... (2) Disk book era --- Diskette, disk, optical disk, CD-ROM, USB (Universal Serial Bus) (3) The screen book era uses communication networks---wired telephone lines and wireless communication networks. Network (wired, wireless) + screen (terminal, monitor) --- PC, ebook reader, smartphone "Traditional publishing and e-publishing are the same process of making a book, only the final product is different." "It's just a matter of whether it's on paper or electronic content at the end, but the planning, editing, and production process is the same. Nowadays, instead of putting lead type together by hand to make a page, we put digital type together to make a page. At the end of the day, whether you're publishing traditionally or electronically, it's the same process of creating a page and getting it to print." Changes in the way books are planned 1) One Source One product 2) One Source multi product Paperback to ebook 3) One Source multi use From book form to drama, movie... 4) Network use --- Ubiquitous era = anytime, anywhere present everywhere era... == https://cafe.naver.com/editsociety/291 |
